Ebola is a severe and often fatal viral disease caused by viruses belonging to the genus Ebolavirus. The illness primarily affects humans and nonhuman primates and is known for causing outbreaks of hemorrhagic fever, particularly in parts of Central and West Africa. Ebola gained worldwide attention because of its high fatality rate, rapid spread during outbreaks, and devastating effects on healthcare systems and communities. Since its discovery in 1976, Ebola has remained one of the most feared infectious diseases in the world.
What Is Ebola?
Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a rare but dangerous illness that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, vomit, sweat, urine, or semen. The disease can also spread through contaminated surfaces and medical equipment. Ebola is not spread through the air like influenza or COVID-19, but close physical contact greatly increases the risk of transmission.
Discovery and Origins
Ebola was first identified in 1976 during simultaneous outbreaks in Sudan and what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The virus was named after the Ebola River, located near one of the outbreak sites. Scientists believe fruit bats are the natural reservoir hosts of the virus, although the disease can also infect monkeys, apes, and other mammals.
Types of Ebola Viruses
Several species of Ebola viruses have been identified, including Zaire ebolavirus, Sudan ebolavirus, Bundibugyo ebolavirus, and Taï Forest ebolavirus. Among these, Zaire ebolavirus has caused the deadliest outbreaks. Different species vary in mortality rates and geographic distribution, but all can cause severe disease in humans.
Symptoms and Disease Progression
Symptoms of Ebola usually appear between 2 and 21 days after exposure to the virus. Early signs are often similar to other infectious diseases, which can make diagnosis difficult during the initial stages.
Early Symptoms
Initial symptoms commonly include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, and weakness. As the infection progresses, patients may develop vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and skin rashes. Severe dehydration and exhaustion are common during this stage.
Severe Complications
In advanced cases, Ebola can damage blood vessels and impair the body's ability to clot blood properly. This may lead to internal bleeding, organ failure, shock, and death. The fatality rate varies depending on the outbreak and medical care available, ranging from around 25% to as high as 90% in some outbreaks.
Transmission and Prevention
Ebola outbreaks are often intensified by close contact among family members, caregivers, and healthcare workers. Traditional burial practices involving direct contact with the deceased have also contributed to transmission in some regions.
How Ebola Spreads
The virus enters the body through broken skin or mucous membranes. Individuals are not considered contagious until symptoms begin. Patients remain infectious while the virus is present in their bodily fluids, even after recovery in certain cases. Survivors may carry the virus in immune-protected areas of the body for months.
Preventive Measures
Prevention strategies include isolating infected patients, using personal protective equipment, disinfecting contaminated materials, and tracing contacts of infected individuals. Vaccines such as the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine have significantly improved outbreak control efforts. Public health education and rapid response systems are also essential in limiting the spread of the disease.
Treatment and Global Impact
There is no universal cure for Ebola, but supportive medical care greatly improves survival rates. Patients may receive intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, blood pressure support, and treatments for secondary infections. In recent years, experimental antiviral drugs and monoclonal antibody therapies have shown promising results.
Major Outbreaks
The largest Ebola outbreak occurred in West Africa between 2014 and 2016, affecting Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. More than 28,000 cases and over 11,000 deaths were reported during the epidemic. The outbreak highlighted weaknesses in healthcare infrastructure and prompted major international public health reforms.
Modern Research and Preparedness
Scientists continue to study Ebola viruses in order to improve vaccines, treatments, and outbreak detection methods. International cooperation between governments, research institutions, and organizations such as the World Health Organization remains critical for responding to future outbreaks quickly and effectively.
